15.03.2024

The Republic of Belarus is celebrating one of the key dates in the history of sovereign Belarus – March 15, 1994. On that day the Constitution was adopted, which for the first time in the history of Belarusian statehood consolidated the status of the Republic as a unitary democratic social state governed by the rule of law. This document laid a solid legal foundation of independence, realized the aspiration of the Belarusian people to be a full-fledged master in their native land.

The whole system of current legislation is formed on the basis of the Constitution, it defines the competence of state bodies and the boundaries of legal regulation. The Constitution establishes the legal status of state authorities, which makes it possible to determine the hierarchy of normative acts adopted by them. At the same time, the most important legal property of the Constitution is its supremacy in relation to all other legal acts.

The current Constitution embodies the continuity and experience of the centuries-long historical path of Belarus and marks a new stage in the political, social and economic development of the country. It is based on the inalienable sovereign right of the Belarusian people to have its own statehood and to be a full-fledged subject of the world community.

The Belarusian Constitution guarantees to every citizen the freedoms and rights necessary for creative labor, decent life and harmonious all-round development of the personality.
